The buzzword today is GLP-1! It relates to some medications for Type 2 Diabetes and their use for weight loss.
GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone produced in the intestines in response to food. It is released to raise blood sugar levels and starts to appear about 2 hours after a meal. It helps to slow down the rate at which food empties from the stomach, which can help reduce appetite. It’s ‘Glucagon-like’ because the hormone Glucagon in our bodies works in opposition to insulin (which helps lower blood sugar levels). When blood sugar levels drop, glucagon is released to help raise them back up. So we won’t feel as hungry.
Medications such as Ozempic and Mounjaro mimic the effects of GLP-1. Aside from their treatment for Diabetes and obesity, they are also being studied for their potential to treat other conditions, such as heart disease and cancer.
Long-term effects? TBD.
Here are some foods that can naturally boost GLP-1 levels:
- Protein, especially salmon
- Fiber
- Fermented Foods (kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, miso)
- Cinnamon
- Green Tea
- Olive oil
- Lentils
- Quinoa
- Chia seeds
