The weather may be warming, but sipping warm bone broth will continue for many regardless of the time of year. What is bone broth? Bone broth is the liquid, or stock, from boiling animal bones and connective tissue. It is simmered from 8-24+ hours to develop that rich flavor. Bone broth can never be technically vegan because the bones used always come from an animal-based source (hmm, false advertising alert).
Bone broth pros:
- Ranging from 7-10 grams per cup, bone broth is a good source of protein.
- May promote skin health due to its collagen content.
- Rich in vitamins and minerals.
Bone broth cons:
- Long-simmering hours can leech lead from the bones. Ideally, choose brands with simmering times less than 10 hours and regularly test their batches for lead. You can also decide to make bone broth at home.
- Most bone broths can be high in glutamate, which can cause headaches and digestive upset for some.
- Bone broth can be high in oxalates which aren’t suitable for people with a history of kidney stones or kidney problems.
