Marketing claims for products to detox are in full swing this time of year. There are juices, soups, spices, and all sorts of concoctions trying to convince the consumer that extreme (lack of research) measures will rid the body of unwanted toxins. Untrue.
The body is well-equipped to eliminate toxins. Detoxification is a process helped along through the liver, lungs, intestines, and kidneys. It’s a 24-hour job! Diet imbalances, certain illnesses, and individuals whose DNA shows they need a little extra push can strain the detoxification system. Some symptoms your body isn’t detoxing the best way it can include: constant hunger, difficulty losing weight, unexplained food, medicine, environmental sensitivities and reactions, fatigue, sleep problems, constipation, and bloating.
You DO have the power to enhance your body’s natural detoxification system. Here’s how:
Hydrate.
In addition to its many roles in the body, water allows the detoxification system to remove waste products better.
Sweat.
Sweating lets the body rid itself of toxins. Like, really sweating. Be sure to towel off or shower within an hour of your sweat session.
Choose cruciferous foods often.
Cruciferous foods, especially broccoli, are a good source of the detoxifying compound sulforaphane.
Eat foods high in prebiotics.
A diet rich in PRE-biotics keeps your digestive system healthy, supporting detoxification.
Create a 12-hour window where you don’t eat daily.
The body needs a period (12–13 hours is all you need) without food to detox for the next day.
Know your DNA.
Some specific gene expressions let us know if we need to give our detoxification system a little more TLC to alleviate symptoms. Are you someone who needs additional support to detox? Reply for more information, or head to my website for a complimentary call.
