The transitioning weather calls for a shift in our approach to health. Fall and winter present unique opportunities to make a few adjustments for our well-being. Some health needs will change, and it’s essential to pivot. Here are five key areas that deserve your attention:
Nutrition
Fall and winter offer more seasonal produce than you may think. Rich, earthy flavors of root vegetables like sweet potatoes, carrots, and butternut squash are packed with vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants. Add autumn fruits such as apples and pears for a healthy dose of fiber and natural sweetness.
Hydration
The weather may be cooler, but the importance of staying hydrated doesn’t change. Grab two glasses before leaving the house or starting your day, and tote a water bottle you drink throughout the day that you try to refill once before dinner.
Craving Control
Dwindling sunlight robs the body of serotonin, and cravings for sweets rear their head. Focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Stick to a meal schedule and enjoy treats within a half hour of closing a meal instead of on an empty stomach to balance blood sugar better.
Movement
It’s important to adjust your fitness routine to suit the changing weather. Set a timer to walk up and down stairs for 10 minutes, do chores consistently for 30 minutes, or take a walk in the late afternoon to grab some daylight. Whatever you choose, make movement consistent to boost your overall health.
Mental Health
Prioritize self-care activities that bring joy and relaxation, whether reading, taking long baths, or creative hobbies. Social connection with friends and loved ones can provide emotional support during the colder months.
Know your DNA
Some clues in your DNA give insight into how your body best uses circadian rhythms.
