The real cost of chronic inflammation

Nov 5, 2026 | Health & Wellness, Healthy Habits, Inflammation

Five weeks. One topic. And this is the one I’ve been building toward.

Because understanding what inflammation is and how to address it only gets you so far. What really changes behavior, at least for me and for most of the clients I work with, is understanding what’s at stake if you don’t.

So let’s talk about that.

What chronic inflammation does over time

The diseases most closely linked to chronic inflammation are not rare or abstract. They are the leading causes of death and disability in the developed world.

Heart disease. Chronic inflammation damages arterial walls and drives the formation of plaques long before any symptoms appear. Elevated inflammatory markers are now considered an independent risk factor for cardiovascular events, separate from cholesterol.

Type 2 diabetes. Inflammation directly impairs how your cells respond to insulin. The metabolic and inflammatory processes are so intertwined that addressing one almost always improves the other.

Cognitive decline. Neuroinflammation is now central to how researchers understand Alzheimer’s, not simply as a plaque accumulation problem but as a failure of the brain’s immune system to resolve inflammation over time. Chronic systemic inflammation contributes to this process over decades.

Autoimmune conditions. Persistent immune activation increases the likelihood that the body’s self-regulation breaks down. This is a compounding problem, from Hashimoto’s to rheumatoid arthritis.

Depression and anxiety. The link between inflammation and mood disorders has substantial research behind it. Inflammatory signals directly suppress the production of serotonin and disrupt the stress response in ways that independently drive low mood and anxiety.

The good news, and it’s significant…

Inflammation is one of the most responsive processes in the body.

It responds to dietary change within weeks. To improve sleep within days. To achieve stress reduction within hours.

You are not locked into your current inflammatory load. The body wants to resolve inflammation when the conditions allow it and creating those conditions is largely within your control.

Everything this month has been pointing toward one message: you have more influence over your long-term health than the chronic disease statistics suggest. And the time to use that influence is now. Schedule a free chat to learn more.

Three things to carry forward:

1. Pick your one non-negotiable. From everything we covered – sleep, diet, movement, stress- what’s the one thing you’re going to protect consistently? One habit done well compounds into real change. You don’t need to do everything. You need to do something, reliably.

2. Ask for an hs-CRP at your next physical. It’s a simple add-on to standard bloodwork and gives you an objective baseline to work from. If it’s above 1 mg/L, you have a data point. If it’s already low, you have confirmation.
