Most conversations about diabetes prevention start too late.
By the time someone gets a diagnosis or even a prediabetes flag their metabolism has been sending signals for years. The problem isn’t that the body didn’t warn us. It’s that we weren’t looking in the right places.
That’s what personalized prevention is all about. Not waiting for a number to cross a threshold, but understanding your individual metabolic blueprint well before that ever happens.
Here are three places to start:
1. Ask for more than a fasting glucose. A standard fasting glucose gives you a snapshot of one moment in time. What you really want to know is fasting insulin, HbA1c, and your triglyceride-to-HDL ratio. These markers paint a far more complete picture of how your metabolism is actually functioning, and they’re often not ordered unless you ask.
2. Understand what your DNA is telling you. Certain genetic variants affect how your body processes carbohydrates, responds to saturated fat, and regulates insulin. Knowing your genetic predispositions doesn’t mean your health is predetermined, it means you can make smarter, more targeted choices instead of following generic advice that was never designed for your biology.
3. Look at patterns, not just numbers. One lab result in isolation doesn’t tell you much. What matters is the pattern over time of how your markers trend, how your energy and weight respond to different inputs, and where your body consistently struggles. That’s where the real information lives.
I’ve sat across from so many people who were doing everything they were told eating well, exercising, staying on top of their checkups and still felt like something was off. Their labs were “fine.” Their doctors weren’t concerned. But they knew their body was trying to tell them something.
That’s exactly why I do this work. Because “fine” isn’t the same as thriving. And you deserve to know the difference.
